Honeymoon Registry

Our St. Lucia Honeymoon

Dear family and friends,

Tom and I have lived on our own for a long time and are fortunate enough to now have a nice home together full of everything we need. So, in lieu of a traditional registry we have set up this “Honeymoon Registry” to help us fulfill a dream of ours of going to St. Lucia in the Caribbean. We both love to travel, so we hope to take many more trips together. But, our Honeymoon… our first trip together as a married couple… will be the trip that we will talk about for the rest of our lives!

Sincerely,

Carolyn & Tom

3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy
Mount Vernon, VA 22309

http://www.mountvernon.org

Please RSVP no later than 30 May, 2014.

Mount Vernon was the plantation home of George Washington, the commander in chief of American Forces in the Revolutionary War, and the first President of the United States. George Washington and his wife, Martha, called Mount Vernon home for more than 40 years. Mount Vernon is an American landmark and a lasting reminder of the life and legacy of the Father of Our Country. Today, Mount Vernon is the most popular historic estate in America!

Touring Mount Vernon:

We would like for our guests to have the opportunity to visit Mount Vernon on our Wedding Weekend… especially, those who are coming in from out of town! However, in order to purchase admission tickets at a reduced cost, we need to know how many people are interested in touring the Estate.

Note: The “ticket time” indicates the time you have to be in line to tour the Mansion. Guests need to arrive prior to “ticket time”... to allow time to walk from the parking lot to the main entrance, to see the orientation film "We Fight to Be Free" (approximately 25 minutes), and then proceed to the Mansion. The Mansion tour is approximately 30 minutes. Touring the Estate could take anywhere from 2 - 4 hours... depending on what you want to see.

Parking:

Visitor parking is always free at Mount Vernon. There are parking lots on the east (Potomac River) and west sides of the GW Memorial Parkway, as you approach Mount Vernon.

Click here for a map of the parking lots: http://www.mountvernon.org/visit/travel-information

The Estate:

The estate, gardens, and farms of Mount Vernon totaled some 8,000 acres in the 18th century. Today, nearly 500 acres of this historic property have been preserved along the banks of the Potomac River. Over 80 million people have visited Mount Vernon since 1860, when the estate was officially opened to the public. Mount Vernon now welcomes an average of one million guests each year.

Guests to Mount Vernon can visit the Mansion, more than a dozen original structures, George Washington’s Tomb, and nearly 50 acres of his extensive plantation. The estate also includes a working blacksmith shop, a pioneer farm, four separate gardens, and a 4-acre demonstration farm with a reconstructed slave cabin and a 16-sided treading barn.

About Us

Engagement Video

This “short film” by Thomas Doty, Jr., Productions… is just a series of pictures taken on the night of our engagement… and, set to music. The music is Enya’s “Silent Night” sung in Italian.

In order, the pictures are of us in the car going to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception... then, before and after “The Proposal” at the National Shrine... the engagement celebration and Christmas Eve dinner in Crystal City, Virginia... in the lobby of our apartment building in Crystal City... and finally, back home in our apartment.

The tribute is to my mother, Concepcion Navar Cameron. The picture was taken about 50 years ago… when my mother got engaged to my father. I have this picture of her posing with her engagement ring in our living room. Thankfully, when Tom and I got home on Christmas Eve… we thought of and tried to “replicate” my mother's pose. That’s what you’ll see here…

About Us

Proposal Video

The proposal was a complete surprise to me! Of course, Tom had been planning it for months. I would never have expected it because I thought we were still looking for “The Ring.” Tom told me that someone else had bought the beautiful engagement ring we were looking at before we did. He acted out this charade for months. In fact, someone had bought the ring… Tom did! I also knew that before Tom would ever propose to me he would want to talk to my father. Unbeknownst to me, Tom and my father met before Christmas… and, had “The Talk!”

Then, on Christmas Eve, Tom and I went up to the alter after mass to take pictures. I saw a family with four young boys and asked one of them to take our picture. Before I knew it… Tom got down on one knee in front of a large crowd… and, asked me to marry him! I was momentarily shocked. He said, “Well?” I said, “Yes, of course!” Thankfully, the young boy converted the phone from camera to video mode so we were able to capture that precious moment in time. That’s what you’ll see here…

Bascilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

The National Shrine has always been a special place for us to worship and reflect on our faith. We are fortunate to have celebrated many special occasions and holidays here.

On Christmas Eve, after mass… Thomas Doty got down on one knee on the altar of the Bascilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception … and, asked Carolyn Cameron to marry him.

She said, "Yes, of course!"

About Us

Our Story

It all started in 1994! A love story two decades in the making. Tom and I had both been in the Air Force, which led us to assignments at the Pentagon. When we met, we were both working at the Pentagon, for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). Over 30,000 people work at the Pentagon… and, we were both working for an organization called the Defense Intelligence Network (DIN) -- the government’s classified version of CNN (pre cable, pre FOX News Network, and pre internet)! The stars had aligned...

Click Here for 9 Things You May Not Know About the Pentagon

Tom had already left the Air Force and was working as a civilian for DIA as the Chief Engineer for the DIN. I was a Captain in the Air Force and had been recently assigned as a News Anchor for the DIN. We worked for the same organization…not in the same office. Still, we would see each other every day – it took a large team to produce our daily, live, hourly broadcasts. It was "Love at First Sight!" We started dating shortly after we met. And, here’s how our 20 year romance unfolded…

From 1994 1998, Tom and I were both in the same place at the same time… Virginia (except when I left for Flight Attendant training in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania). Then, in 1999, Tom left DIA and his career with the government... to pursue "Big Business Opportunities" in Atlanta, Georgia.

From 1999 2001, I lived in Virginia, and Tom lived in Georgia. Because I was working for the airlines… we were still able to see each other often. I often had layovers in Atlanta... or, I would just go there to spend my days off with Tom. Then, after September 11, 2001, things changed. I was recalled back to active duty with the Air Force, where I worked long hours… for a very long time after that. Meanwhile, Tom was busy working as the President for Media 1st… and, then in 2003, he started his own company, VenU.

From 2002 – 2011, basically, the next decade… Tom and I were both very busy working. We only saw each other a few times over the years… but, we talked almost every day… and, we were always in each other's hearts.

Then, for our birthdays in 2012, (mine is August 30, his is September 7), Tom came to visit me in Virginia over Labor Day weekend. We were reunited… and, knew from that moment on we didn’t want to be apart any longer. We got engaged in December of 2012… and, the rest is history!

In 2013, Tom and I traveled and lived in/between Crystal City, VA; Atlanta, GA; and Blue Ridge GA. We were blessed to be able to take trips to visit our families in FL, TX and OH. And, we celebrated our birthdays in Aruba. I also became a Mother to our handsome, smart and patient dog Buddy... who has taught me a whole new "Lesson in Love." Thankfully, Tom picked Buddy up from the rescue shelter in Atlanta, years ago.

Now, on August 31, 2014… a little more than 20 years after we met… Tom and I will be married in a location as unique, historic, and romantic as our relationship. It is said, that for everything under the Sun... there is a time, a place, and a season -- that some things are meant to be... meant to stand the “Test of Time.” Thank God… "Our Story" is one of them.

About Us

The Groom

In addition to being "the luckiest man in the world"... here’s my story...

I was born in northeastern Ohio and grew up in the small town of Stow, just outside of Akron. I got used to rainy days and cold winters, but learned the best lessons in life and experienced the best childhood anyone could ask for. I played little league football and baseball, and I even made it to the All-Star game as the starting pitcher – I’m pretty sure it was because my dad was best friends with the coach!

Growing up, my family spent many summers and holidays in southwestern Pennsylvania, Carmichaels, where father was born and raised. My mother is from Canonsburg, a small town not too far away. The Staun’s who have always been like family to us, spent as much time together throughout the years as we possibly could – and those are cherished memories for all of us. I am a Pittsburg Steelers fan!

High school arrived and I found myself constantly getting told to “turn it down!” by the parental units. I had bought my first electric guitar and the biggest amp I could afford with aspirations of becoming the next Eddie Van Halen. Not much time to work on that these days… so I had to pass down the torch to my nephew, Trenton Pryor, who now plays in a band around the Akron area and is keeping the dream alive.

I learned the meaning of hard work from my father, Tom Sr., who retired from General Motors after 38 years and rarely missed a day of work – he worked plenty of overtime too, as much as they would let him! My mom, Caffie, retired from nursing at Akron General Hospital after 20 years. She is a home and gardening enthusiast with a love for animals. I owe much of my success to what my parents taught me – even if they didn’t know they were teaching at the time.

My older sister, Debbie, is married to my brother-in-law, Gary Pryor. They have two children, Alyssa and Trenton. My younger brother, Tim (aka Moosie), works for the City of Cuyahoga Falls and keeps the water on for thousands of people every day. We all share a close family bond.

I joined the U.S. Air Force in 1984, and served for nearly eight years. I was stationed at Lowry AFB, Colorado; Hill AFB, Utah; Iraklion AS, Crete, Greece; and finally Bolling AFB, Washington DC, where I was stationed at the Pentagon. While in the Air Force, I worked as a broadcast engineer, maintaining and designing television and radio stations, and I earned an Associate’s degree in Electronic Technologies. I was hired on as a civilian by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 1992, and served as their Senior Technology Officer. I worked for the best boss ever, Jim “Smitty” Smith, and spent many weekends with him and his wife, Evelyn, (my adopted parents) at Lake Anna in Virginia. While at the DIA, I earned a BS in Computer Science, and a MS in Computer Science Information Systems.

Best of all, I met Carolyn at the DIA – I knew I was in love from the moment I saw her! She worked as a TV anchor for the Defense Intelligence Network (DIN), and I was running the engineering group. The news always seemed a lot more interesting to me then, and the picture quality was amazing!

In 1998, I was recruited to start and run Media1st in Atlanta, GA. In 2003, I decided to start my own company, VenU, which today provides eLearning solutions to large corporations.

I am blessed to have two talented and gifted children, Jeremy and Stephanie.

Stephanie is a recent graduate from Kent State University, and now works at Enterprise as a manager trainee. She is beautiful, smart and driven and has been extremely successful in her new job – she has already been recognized as a top performer and I’m certain she will accomplish great things.

Jeremy saves lives every day! He is a paramedic in Youngstown, Ohio, and worked as an EMT prior to becoming a Paramedic. Jeremy is very smart and he currently attends the University of Akron. Unfortunately, he is a Cleveland Browns (and Cavaliers) fan! Did I mention that I’m a Steelers fan?

The Doty Family Name:

The name Doty has a history dating as far back as the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. First found in Suffolk where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The first record of the name Doty is believed to have been found in Surrey County, England in 1066, and believed to have been derived from the Anglo-Saxon nickname "the Doughty" meaning the strong, brave and valiant. Families of this name were to be found at early dates in English Counties, they were prominent in Social, Civic, and Military life. Spelling variations of this family name include: Doughty, Doughtie, Dowtie, Dowty and others.

Pilgrim Edward Doty:

Forty-one men, who were passengers on the Mayflower, signed the compact on arrival at Cape Cod, MA. Edward Doty was one of the signers, and "made his mark."

About Us

The Bride

I am so thankful for this man... and, so blessed to be marrying him. I feel like "the luckiest woman in the world!" Here’s my story…

I was born on August 30th, at Fort Bliss Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas, to the most amazing parents a girl could ever ask for… Carl and Conchita (Connie). A couple of years later I was blessed with a brother, Michael. He too was born in El Paso, Texas… while my father was serving in Vietnam. My father, Michael, and I are all Dallas Cowboys FANS!

My father is from Spartanburg, South Carolina. He met my mother when he was a Captain in the U.S. Army… stationed at Fort Bliss. My mother was from El Paso, Texas… and, was working as a teacher when she met my father. She was a gifted and talented pianist, vocalist, and dancer. My father retired after 20 years of service. And, my mother is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. She is forever loved… missed… and, always in our hearts.

Growing up an “Army Brat”… my family and I lived in El Paso, TX; Colombia, SC; Kansas City, KS; Queens, NY; Alexandria, VA; and Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands (a small island in the Pacific… very small – 2.5 miles long x .5 mile wide). I learned the meaning of hard work early on. While on Kwajalein, I studied the piano with a world-class concert pianist; learned how to play the French horn and the flute; and, studied ballet and hula dancing. I worked at the local movie theater, the recreation center, and established my own “Babysitting Business” when I was in the 5th Grade. I had two employees – they were my friends who would work for me when I couldn’t.

Before I started high school… my parents decided it was time to leave the island and head back to the “Real World.” We moved back to Virginia, and I attended Mount Vernon High School (yes, right down the street from our Wedding event). During high school, I studied the French horn with a member of the U.S. Air Force Band, played in and traveled with the Concert Band, and performed and traveled with the Marching Majors Drill Team. My mother’s daughter… I was always “thinking ahead.” And, in high school…that meant to go to college. So, instead of having "fun in the sun” like my brother who worked as a lifeguard during the summers… I worked at the Pentagon as a summer intern for four years for the Department of Air Force Manpower and Personnel.

My family and I spent many summers when I was growing up visiting my grandparents in South Carolina… and, my grandparents, my mother’s five brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, and my sixteen first cousins, when they were living in or visiting Texas, too. These are cherished memories for all of us.

After high school, I left home in search of a “Big City" school… and, found that in The University of Texas at Austin. When I arrived, I joined the Air Force ROTC program. I was also a Resident Assistant in the women’s dorm for two years, belonged to two service fraternities, and taught aerobics at the Austin Aerobics Club. Four years later, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) in 1988. By the way, my brother went on to play football (kicker) for the U.S. Air Force Academy… was also commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant… was a C-5 Pilot in the U.S. Air Force for ten years… and, is now a pilot for Jet Blue. So much for my “Practical Planning!?!” I might as well have gotten a tan too!

Michael is married to my sister-in-law, Jody, a former Social Worker from Sacramento, California. They have two children, Ashleigh, my Goddaughter, and Alexander. They currently live in Orlando, Florida. We all share a close family bond.

After graduation, I attended the University of Salamanca, Spain, for a semester… and then, USAF Intelligence Officer Training School in San Angelo, TX, for a year. I had active duty assignments at Langley AFB, VA; Naples, Italy; Howard AFB, Panama; and, the Pentagon in Washington, DC. In 1997, I went into the USAF Reserves. In 1998, I became a Flight Attendant for US Airways and was based out of Reagan National Airport in Arlington, VA. And, in 2001, I graduated with a Master’s Degree in Communications from the University of Oklahoma. After September 11, 2001, I was recalled back to active duty with the USAF. I worked at the Pentagon for the next decade… until I retired in 2012 as a Lt Colonel... after almost 25 years of service. In 2011, I went to work as a contractor, consulting in Organizational Development, Training, and Strategic Communications as part of the Emergency Management Team at the Defense Intelligence Agency. In November, 2012, I resigned from the government… to start my new and long awaited life with Tom.

On August 31, 2014, Tom and I will be remembering my mother, Concepcion Navar Cameron, and all of those who we’ve lost who can’t be with us on our special day. My family and I visited Mount Vernon frequently growing up, and my mother loved it there. I know that she’ll be with us in Spirit. In honor of her… I’ll be wearing the dress she wore on June 19, 1965… when she married my father in El Paso, Texas.
